AWS Wasn't Built on Spare Servers: The Idle Capacity Myth

AWS Wasn’t Built on Spare Servers: The Idle Capacity Myth

You’ve probably heard it: Amazon bought too many servers for the holidays, they sat idle in January, so somebody decided to rent them out, and that’s how Amazon Web Services was born. The people who built it say it isn’t true. In this video, I look at what really happened, why the spare-server story couldn’t work, and why the myth won’t die. Then we look at where idle assets really pay (cars, hotels, homes, warehouses), where they broke (Getaround, WeWork), and three questions to ask before you build a business on idle capacity.
