How to Crack the $100M Innovation Code
You already know the answer, but here's a new twist - and its now FREE
At first I thought “Hey, I’m gonna keep this a secret.” Then, I thought “I need to protect this” so I put it behind paywall. Then I realized that the best protection I had was to give it away to everyone so my competitors couldn’t use my work against me. You can do it without them!
So, that’s what I’m doing today. You may have seen this post on LinkedIn this morning.
My goal is to turn so many problem-solvers on to our little secret that it becomes the new standard. There’s a problem, though. Sadly, one that has not been cracked by the pioneers of this methodology. An entrepreneur I came across that is a fan of ODI sums it up like this (this is a Grok summary of a recent thread on X):
’s recent tweets paint JTBD as a powerful but underappreciated tool in the startup world. He views it as a way to align products with customer needs and sidestep market missteps, though not a foolproof solution for success. However, he observes that startup founders—particularly in Silicon Valley—have largely failed to adopt it, possibly due to its divergence from conventional thinking. While a small, passionate group continues to champion JTBD, ’s frustration underscores the challenge of broadening its appeal. His insights reveal both the promise of JTBD and the hurdles it faces in transforming how startups operate.
My definition of success is that we can address the entire market of companies that are competing for growth; regardless of stage, size, or industry. In it’s traditional form, it can never accomplish that.
I spent the past two years fine-tuning and expanding the modeling capabilities that AI offers us in the context of Jobs to be Done research. Take it from someone who’s been there, this is well over 50% of the effort; maybe more. It’s the only proprietary part of the method because everything after is just standard stuff - albeit standard stuff being fed a diet of very precise targeting calories.
I’m going to spend my time developing a way to obfuscate the rest of the stuff we have to do:
Surveys
ETL
Data Modeling
Data Analysis
Strategy Formulation
Concept Development
Sounds like a lot. Not really. There is still a lot of room for us humans post survey, ETL, data modeling and data analysis. 👈🏻 I’m eliminating the data prioritization stuff next, in a completely new way. No, I’m not inventing anything. I’m using the tools currently available to me in a completely new way, though.
Data is the key to everything.
TL;DR
Here is a link that will get you all free access to the entire toolkit I use to eliminate the large consulting footprint of JTBD research.
If you’re not already a member of my community, this will also get you in there as well. Why would you want to do that? Because I post all kinds of other stuff there, and if you need support in learning to use what I’m giving you, you’ll find free courses in there (and more coming) to give you a helping hand.
Note: Current community members need to signup above to get it as well
Final Thought
At the end of the day, our stakeholders are action-oriented, and the faster and less expensively we can show them which actions will give them the best chance of success we will have delivered something truly disruptive.
Note: As Scott also mentioned, there is more to startup success than JTBD, execution after the insights is critical. I can’t control that yet 😁. But the more people we can get on the right course the more time they’ll have to learn how to build and market more effectively.
Let’s redefine what conventional means! Spread the word!
